A Crime Theory Demolished
If poverty is the root cause of lawlessness, why did crime rates fall when joblessness increased?
By Heather MacDonald

The recession of 2008-09 has undercut one of the most destructive social theories that came out of the 1960s: the idea that the root cause of crime lies in income inequality and social injustice. Our culture values rebellion and lawlessness to a certain degree. Part of it goes back to the Age of Enlightenment and the American Revolution. But the greater part goes back to the 1960s. The hip-hop/gangsta culture also feeds into this.

A big double THIS! for everything you said. You are absolutely right about the rebellion and lawlessness factor; our own country began as a rebellion against the United Kingdom. And yes, I have met a lot of people (who also happen to be either Pagans or New Agers) who are very much stuck in the '60's frame of mind (war and government is evil, anarchy rules).
